Glastonbury
We roll in, with good spirits, but we're tired, it's wet amd muddy, and there's a possibility that there's no room for our tent. The only place left for us is a stone's throw from the G-stage. It's great to not have to venture very far to find music, but we try to steal a few more hours sleep before the show but sleeping through Shitmatt playing twenty metres away is not conducive to good rest. Not even Nelly is brave enough to ask them to turn it down please.
The size and scope of Glastonbury is immense. Looking out over the Pyramid stage crowds is sickeningly commercial - the tens of thousands of people flock to see what MTV's marketing guys want them to see and as we retreat to our safehaven of the Dance Village area, it's an unspoken truth that that's the stage we'd crave to be on.
Annie Mac and Kimba are pumping up an increasingly-strong crowd as we prepare to take the stage. It's a relatively thin crowd as people raise an initial eyebrow to say, 'who the hell are the guys?' and by the end, the crowd is jumping as the crowd decides they don't care who we are... we're good enough. The mud-surrounded party ensues.
Whilst playing Glastonbury was a heady dream (in Fear and Loathing style), post-Glasto life is more focused on pushing towards making a name for ourselves - to eliminate that first half of the set where we're proving our worth to the crowd. As we sit in the pit watching Pendulum, the crowd is in a frenzy before they even hit a note.
This is Amy on the left. Towards the end of the show, Stuey started throwing out some free CDs. The first few just about made it over the crowd barrier so he started getting more aggressive with his throws. One sailed high and made it a few rows back. Then came a power throw which went low and hard, and straight into Amy's face. Luckily for our lawyers, it hit solid cheekbone rather than fleshy eyeball, and she was so cool, she saw the funny side and joined us for partying afterwards.
Playing at Glasto is a brilliant experience: You get paid to go. You don't have to trek miles from your van to your tent. Crew toilets are a gazillion times better.
